The History of Goody’s

1984

First created by Marne and Marion Palmateer in Sunriver, Oregon, in 1984, Goody’s Candy Store began as a family business selling assorted candies purchased for resale. Later, the Palmateers started making their own chocolate to sell in their store. While mixing, tempering, and molding chocolate in their home kitchen, the Palmateers developed the time-tested recipes we still use today.

The store then moved to one of its current locations, in the Sunriver Village Mall, where the Palmateers began making their own award-winning ice cream. The Sunriver Goody’s store continues to be visitors’ favorite stop during busy vacation times and a year-round local fixture.

To keep up with the demand for quality chocolate and ice cream, the Palmateers opened a larger production facility in Bend, Oregon. The Factory, as it is lovingly called, is still running strong today! Every year, we produce over 16 tons of handmade chocolate, tens of thousands of gallons of ice cream, and various flavors of irresistible gourmet popcorn.

In 1990, Goody’s opened its doors in downtown Bend, Oregon. Conveniently nestled on the bustling corner of Wall Street and Oregon Street, this spot offers locals and visitors alike the same award-winning ice creams, chocolates, and popcorn that originated in Sunriver.

Brett Palmateer, descendant of the original creators, owns and operates a Goody’s in Boise, Idaho.

Although Goody’s ownership has changed hands since the Palmateers, the business remains true to its original traditions and community spirit. In 2007, the Danforths purchased and operated Goody’s (excluding the independent and unrelated Boise store) until 2018. That's when two Bend families, the Smiths and the Goodmans, jointly purchased the company. Their big plans to rejuvenate Goody’s got derailed by the pandemic, but due to the tremendous love of the Goody’s community they were able to get past the tough times for everyone and keep the Goody’s tradition alive.

2023 & Onward!

In 2023, two PTA dads, David Bergman and Mark Strelcheck, saw the opportunity to further embed their families in the Central Oregon community and purchased Goody's from the Smiths.  They immediately renovated the Downtown store to give Goody's the shine it deserves. They then embarked on the creation of GoodysofBend.com to help spread the Goody's love nationwide. Mark and David purchased the new Goody's mobile ice cream trailer, which is now in its inaugural season in Redmond, and will soon feature at events all over Central Oregon.
